Clinical Scope & Conditions Treated

Pediatric Surgical Oncology focuses on the surgical diagnosis, anatomical staging, and curative resection of solid tumors and malignancies in infants, children, and adolescents. Unlike adult cancers (which are predominantly carcinomas associated with lifestyle or environmental factors), childhood tumors are embryonal neoplasms arising from primitive developmental precursor cells. Conditions treated include Wilms' tumor (nephroblastoma), neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, sacrococcygeal teratomas, pancreatic SPEN / pancreatoblastoma, parotid tumors, rhabdomyosarcoma, and totally implantable central venous access (Chemoport insertion).

Understanding the biological origin of childhood tumors provides immediate clarity and reassurance: 1. Embryonal Origin: Childhood tumors arise from primitive precursor cells that underwent spontaneous microscopic alterations during fetal organogenesis. They are completely unrelated to parental lifestyle, diet, physical trauma, or environmental exposures. 2. High Curability: Embryonic childhood tumors are exquisitely sensitive to modern chemotherapy. With precision surgical resection and international cooperative protocols (SIOP/COG), long-term survival rates for localized childhood solid tumors exceed 90% to 95%, allowing children to live normal, healthy, and full adult lives.

Dr. Raghul M's Surgical Leadership

Dr. Raghul M has published pioneering surgical breakthroughs in pediatric surgical oncology. He is the author of a novel Central Pancreatectomy technique published in the Journal of the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (JIAPS 2024), demonstrating how benign and low-grade pediatric pancreatic tumors can be completely excised while preserving the healthy head and tail of the pancreas, preventing lifelong diabetes and avoiding radical Whipple surgery. He reported the first keyhole resection of a 600g pediatric giant mediastinal tumor in IJTCVS (2025) and published the definitive series on pediatric parotid tumors with 100% facial nerve and smile preservation (JIAPS 2023).

Verified Distinctions & Standards
  • •Author of Novel Central Pancreatectomy (JIAPS 2024): Published landmark organ-sparing surgical technique in JIAPS preserving pancreatic head and tail, permanently preventing diabetes.
  • •First in India: Thoracoscopic Giant Tumor Resection (IJTCVS 2025): Successfully resected massive 600g thoracic tumor via keyhole VATS without sternotomy, published in leading peer-reviewed journal.
  • •Published Series: 100% Facial Nerve Preservation (JIAPS 2023): Authored comprehensive clinical series on pediatric parotid gland tumors demonstrating flawless smile and facial movement preservation.
  • •Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (MDT) Collaboration: Collaborates daily with South India's leading pediatric hematology-oncologists to optimize pre-operative chemotherapy timing.
  • •Safe Central Venous Access: Chemoport Insertion: Ultrasound and fluoroscopy-guided totally implantable chemoport placement ensuring painless, reliable IV chemotherapy access.

Clinical Standards of Surgical Care

Standards practiced across all consultations and operations

  1. 1.
Organ-Sparing Surgical PhilosophyWhenever biologically safe, normal healthy organ parenchyma (kidney, pancreas, liver, spleen) is preserved to ensure optimal lifelong endocrine and renal function.
  2. 2.
Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (MDT) CareEvery child's management is agreed upon collaboratively by surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists.
  3. 3.
Sub-Millimeter Nerve & Vessel SparingHigh-power optical magnification and fine bipolar micro-dissection protect critical blood vessels and motor nerves (such as the facial nerve).
  4. 4.
Painless Venous Access (Chemoport)Totally implantable chemoport under the chest skin avoids repeated painful needle pricks and protects delicate peripheral veins during chemotherapy.
